"All roles are dangerous. The world tends to trap you in the role you play and it is always extremely hard to maintain a watchful, mocking distance between oneself as one appears to be and oneself as one actually is."
-James Baldwin as quoted by Marlon RiggsMy practice is striving towards truths. I spend a lot of time in study, variously reading, writing, constructing, riding, and listening to myself. I am often copying and remixing the techniques and approaches of the folks I admire.
I like the blur of art and life, the freedom that can be found in moving focus, and the sublime joy of melting into my surroundings like butter. In this moment I am just starting to see new places I'd like to visit and ways I'd like to go, metaphorically and literally. I still often forget the power inside of me, forget that I am not only what i think i am, forget how to forgive. Yet every once in a while, while running around, singing, dancing, teadrinking, having a biscuit, tying my shoe, looking at the river, listening to bananas, jumping off a cliff, tackling an opponent, typing a statement, while whiling away the hours, while perched in a tree, slurping a smoothie, setting in the library, chatting with a strange man, daydreaming about magical hammock spots, acting stupid on purpose, falling down rabbit holes, and while being hugged, I forget to forget all those things and life seems so magical.
There is a big space between knowing something's name and knowing what it feels like
I encourage you to find some more, feel some more, hold some more.
- & fun, 2024
I study and read a lot, and I like to make beautiful and fun situations, sculptures, and sentences. I studied engineering at Vanderbilt and art at MICA. I like using the languages I learned in both places to inform my understanding of the other.
After formative years in Metairie LA, I have lived in TX, PA, TN, WI, CO, CA, OR, MD and jobbed as a software tech, a waiter, in retail, in photolithography, as a tutor, stonecutter, and a produce boy, as a math teacher, and a pedicabber.
I have a radio show on WTUL as dj amoral purity, have worked on theater projects around the south. My goal is to reveal the power of the human spirit within each of us, to see new ways forward in trying times, through tenderness, clear eyes, and the bravery to keep asking impossible questions.
I hope to find myself in big fun miraculous situations, sculptures and sentences as I grow up, grow down, & notice change all around...
Thanks for visiting!
